Job description: PURPOSE OF YOUR POSITION
Position receives and processes specimens. Receives patients into blood drawing area for the purpose of withdrawing blood, urine, eye, nose and throat collections and other specimens requested by the physician. Ensures laboratory supplies are stored properly. Assist with the point of care program. Receive and fill supply orders from outreach sources.
Work frequently requires standing, sitting, and walking to greet patients throughout the hospital (21-50% of work time).
Work occasionally requires lifting lab supplies and other materials or equipment up to 50 lbs (6-20% of work time).
Visual acuity and sharp focus required to read instructions and examine specimen. Must be able to pass color discrimination test.
Manual dexterity and finger dexterity needed to work with very small specimen and perform laboratory tests.
Work requires occasional travel offsite specimen collections (3-4 times per year).
Generally good office conditions in a climate controlled setting. Some discomfort due to crowded conditions, interruptions or noise from lab instruments (51-80% of work time).
Occasional exposure to biohazard materials, toxic waste, and infectious, irritant materials. Risk of exposure to airborne particles, caustic chemicals and blood borne pathogens may also be present in this work environment. Work requires the use of necessary safety equipment precautions while working with and around hazardous conditions (6-20% of work time).
Subject to injury from confused, combative patients, families and visitors.
Required to be available to work weekends as needed.

High school graduate or equivalent required. Graduate from an approved laboratory assisting program preferred.
One year of phlebotomy or medical assisting experience preferred. Phlebotomy certification preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. Must be able to pass color discrimination test.
Pennsylvania state police criminal record check, child abuse history clearance and an FBI criminal history check required.
Work requires intermediate to advanced computer literacy skills and keyboard proficiency. Must have experience with laboratory information systems. Must also have experience working with clinical documentation systems and hospital information systems. Work requires basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and email.
Work requires interpersonal skills to exchange information and communicate with team members, physicians and nurses. A high level of social sensitivity when communicating with patients. Must be able to effectively communicate to patients during stressful situations and calm patient down. Must be compassionate, professional, and empathetic when handling patient complaints and concerns while remaining focused on providing a positive patient experience (more than 80% of work time). (51-80% of work time).
Work requires advanced analytical skills to perform laboratory testing. Must be able to determine the appropriate test to perform in order to get physicians the desired results. Independent judgment is constantly required (more than 80% of work time).
Work requires mental and visual focus requiring mental application and attention to detail to precisely measure quantity and quality and to perform lab tests. Work is performed under tight deadlines, must possess excellent time management and functional organizational skills to manage a variety of tasks in a short period of time (more than 80% of work time).
Driving a company vehicle (or personal vehicle, as required) is a requirement of the position, and as a condition of employment this position requires the job holder to have and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
a. Valid PA driver’s license and proof of current automobile insurance coverage required.
b. Driving records are obtained prior to new hire starting and are checked intermittently as needed but not less than every three years.
